Chinese scientists create artificial miniature black hole
Researchers create portable black hole
Mini-hole made of metamaterials ensnares microwave light.
Geoff Brumfiel
The artificial 'black hole' sucks up microwaves.Q. Cheng and T. J. Cui
Physicists have created a black hole for light that can fit in your coat pocket. Their device, which measures just 22 centimetres across, can suck up microwave light and convert it into heat.
The hole is the latest clever device to use 'metamaterials', specially engineered materials that can bend light in unusual ways. Previously, scientists have used such metamaterials to build 'invisibility carpets' and super-clear lenses. This latest black hole was made by Qiang Chen and Tie Jun Cui of Southeast University in Nanjing, China, and is described in a paper on the preprint server ArXiv1.
Black holes are normally too massive to be carried around. The black hole at the centre of the Milky Way, for example, has a mass around 3.6 million times that of the Sun and warps the very space around it. Light that travels too close to it can become trapped forever.
The new meta-black hole also bends light, but in a very different way. Rather than relying on gravity, the black hole uses a series of metallic 'resonators' arranged in 60 concentric circles. The resonators affect the electric and magnetic fields of a passing light wave, causing it to bend towards the centre of the hole. It spirals closer and closer to the black hole's 'core' until it reaches the 20 innermost layers. Those layers are made of another set of resonators that convert light into heat. The result: what goes in cannot come out. "The light into the core is totally absorbed," Cui says.
The device is made of 60 concentric metamaterial 'resonators'.Q. Cheng and T. J. Cui *
"I am very impressed," says John Pendry, a theoretical physicist at Imperial College London. Pendry says that the black hole is yet the latest example of the many strange devices that can be built with metamaterials. But, he adds, it is not a perfect black-hole analogy. The enormous gravity of real black holes causes them to emit an eerie quantum glow, known as Hawking radiation. "The optical device reported in this paper has no internal source of energy and therefore cannot emit Hawking radiation," Pendry says.
Nevertheless, Cui says that the hole could prove useful. By the end of the year his team hopes to have a version of the device that will suck up light of optical frequencies. If it works, it could be used in applications such as solar cells.

Lunar Bio-Re-Generator System
RocketMan Lane Patterson says "We are trying to get picked up by national news outlets if we can."
"When you think about it, humanities survival could depend on it! That is to say, everybody lives in a bubble, in our case a biosphere, and we ignore that fact at our own peril. The Lunar Greenhouse Prototype explores the potential for life in a bubble on other planets - namely human life and the life we bring along to sustain us."

Plant "Generators" Sustain Life at Sheer Edges of Existence
By Eric Swedlund
TNAZ Regional Correspondent
Luxuriant edible plants fill UA-CALS-CEAC collapsible lunar greenhouse demonstration system to provide food, air and water supports in extreme environments.
Filling an 18-foot long cylindrical chamber are hearty crops of tomatoes, strawberries and sweet potatoes. They grew to a profuse jungle of sustaining edibles in less than a month under quartz-encased lights, surrounded by darkness. They are green and tangible testament to how a lunar greenhouse could sustain long-term human presence on the moon.
Built in a laboratory surrounded by the dusty farmland of the University of Arizona's agricultural center, the lunar greenhouse prototype is designed for three purposes – water recycling, air revitalization, and food production – that would enable the next great leap in space exploration, a scientific base on the moon.
A collaboration between scientists at the UA-College of Life Science's Controlled Environment Agriculture Center [UA-CALS-CEAC] and Phil Sadler, a Tempe-based engineer and manufacturer who specializes in extreme environments, the lunar greenhouse is designed as an expandable hydroponic chamber, pre-loaded with seeds and nutrient solution, that could be deployed on the moon robotically.
Taking concepts honed at the team's experimental greenhouse at the South Pole, the lunar greenhouse is designed to provide half of the food for a lunar crew and accomplish 100 percent of the necessary air, water and waste recycling.
"Food is a byproduct," Sadler says. "We're trying to revitalize air and recycle water."
The researchers took "seven years of small steps to get to this point," says the CEAC's director Gene Giacomelli, with a shoestring budget of less than $50,000. Now the team is pushing for a NASA grant to continue the research. Without funding the project will be shut down.
"We've gotten this far on Phil's back basically and the center here just to demonstrate a biological principle, but it's a significant one," Giacomelli says. "Nobody else is doing it and it needs to be done."
Though it funded such research in the past, NASA is the only one of the world's space agencies without an ongoing Bioregenerative Life Support System program. But without such a life support system, a new era of manned spaceflight to the moon isn't possible.
The European Space Agency just embarked on a similar concept in Spain with its MELiSSA project, an acronym for Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative.
Giacomelli says NASA's focus on developing the Ares rocket and Orion crew vehicle has been too narrow, at the expense of other crucial research.
"My complaint is this: NASA is dismantling and taking away all that has been built for the previous 30 years. All of those students, faculty and researchers are going to do other things. Then when NASA comes back and says ‘Let's get started,' there is going to be a slow learning curve, just like there was in the 1960s and 1970s," Giacomelli says. "The interest is there, but the money to do the research just isn't."
The current success of robotic space exploration – like NASA's twin Mars rovers and the UA-led Mars Phoenix mission – could be feeding reluctance on NASA's part to work on manned spaceflight, Giacomelli says.
"We feel we have a dart on the wall," Giacomelli says. "We have data that's positive to show we should keep it going."
Graduate student Lane Patterson has worked at the South Pole and handles much of the day-to-day work on the lunar greenhouse, monitoring the plants and the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels via a camera and myriad sensors.
"We can walk away from the chamber for days and days at a time. Tele-presence allows that," he says.
The UA's Peter Smith – who headed the water-finding Mars Phoenix Mission – sees the convergence of robotic missions and the promise of future manned space exploration in the greenhouse.
"The lunar greenhouse experiments at CEAC bring us closer to the day when space travelers can truly become part of a full service artificial ecosystem that purifies their water, oxygenates the air, and provides healthy fresh food," Smith says.
Touring the greenhouse facility, Smith hits on the key question: "What makes it an extraterrestrial system rather than something you put in your yard?"
Sadler describes how the greenhouse is designed to compress to just 4 feet in length for launch, then inflate to its full length once it lands on the moon.
The team imagines a structure of four greenhouses branching out in separate directions around a central core that houses four 16-foot solar collectors that funnel the necessary light to the crops through a fiber optical system. "It's impossible to design a lunar greenhouse unless you design the habitat it goes in," Sadler says.
The greenhouses would be encased in multi-layered sheaths, similar to the materials used for astronauts' space suits. Once the greenhouses are inflated on the moon, a lunar tractor launched on the same craft would bury the greenhouses, protecting the chambers from the micrometeorites constantly pummeling the moon.
"We bury it as fast as we can get it on the ground," Sadler says. "Then within 10 minutes we can have lights on and nutrients flowing. We could have this thing deployed on the moon without people being there."
Once astronauts land on the moon, their urine would be fed into a compost unit and the condensation collected for gray water that is mixed with nutrients and used to grow the plants. The plants then transpire the water into the greenhouse atmosphere, where it is condensed and collected to provide clean water for the crew. Patterson says the lunar greenhouse could generate 47 liters of water a day.
The mass of the hydroponic salts used to grow plants and subsequently revitalize the air will actually provide five times more oxygen by weight than launching oxygen tanks.
The greenhouse prototype features specially designed water-cooled lamps, similar to the ones the researchers have installed in the South Pole greenhouse. Each plant's root system is fed by a separate nutritional solution, allowing several crops to be grown at once.
"Part of the challenge is keeping all three in the right environment so they can all be in production at the same time," Giacomelli says.
The team credits their experience growing crops at the South Pole as necessary preparation for creating a lunar greenhouse. "There are so many analogs there," Sadler says, which allow for a "high degree of mission fidelity."
Not only is it an isolated, extreme environment, but the temperature one meter below the surface is essentially the same temperature as one meter below the surface of the moon. Also, the South Pole snow and lunar soil are similar in weight and density.
"Most of our colleagues the past 30 years have been in little chambers or capsules. We're trying to bring it to the scale it would look like in reality," Giacomelli says.
The research team's design for the overall structure is just a concept, one they know isn't likely once NASA begins its own work on the project. But whatever structure a moon base ultimately takes, they are confident the specific design of the greenhouse can be incorporated.
"Regardless what form it takes, the certainty that we can nail down is the biological system," Patterson says.

Sun's effect on human skin
As you no doubt know, exposure to sunlight causes vitamin D to be produced in your skin. But only a portion of the solar spectrum, known as ultraviolet B (UVB), that has this effect. Other parts of the solar spectrum can have very different and even harmful effects .
Malignant melanoma has been increasing at an exponential rate in indoor workers since before 1940. The reason may be indoor exposure to UVA radiation. Unlike UVB, which is blocked by glass, UVA can pass through windows.

ANGELS
WHY ARE THERE ANGELS?
Why angels? Lord knows. Many tasks have been assigned to them in Jewish and Christian tradition, in folklore and folk theology. People have been guessing at it for 4000 years, probably longer. One helpful view is the "Tess theory", named after Della Reese's TV angel: angels are sent by God to bring the truth, especially the big truths, to specific people in critical situations. The biggest truth (the one that Jesus Christ was living, dying proof of) is that God is with us and for us, and the angel is sent here as a part of that. God's message can be a warning, or be a comfort in times of danger and fear. There's more going on than the careless eye can see, so God's messenger points it out. Since God is way too much for us to take, the messenger is sent in God's stead, like a diplomatic envoy. What happens then is between humans and the Lord. God could deal with humans without using angels. But God chose this way (among other ways) to keep in touch with us and not be a far-off Deist god.
Part of the Unseen
Angels are among the unseen in the "all that is, seen and unseen" that the Nicene Creed says the Father created. They exist to praise God and to bear the message and task for which God sends them, including to us humans. They can think and hold conversations, and they have their own identity. And they appear to people of all religions, even those of no religion at all, when God wants them to listen. Noone can prove angels exist; they are, after all, spiritual beings and don't fit into material-world rules. Not all religious folks believe in angels (for instance, the Jewish Sadducees, and many modernist Christians). But those who have a strong sense of spirituality tend to believe angels are real, and sometimes experience their presence. Thus there are many angel reports from India, Malaysia, and other Asian countries.
Not There to Meddle
Angels are not there to be meddling fix-its, but our helpers in responding to the truth. Angels guide us in the way God wants us to go in a specific situation, sometimes calling us to take a specific action. We can just blow them off, but people usually find themselves responding instantly with some amount of trust, comfort, or awe. Angels can celebrate and have joy, and presumably have other emotions as well. They don't negotiate unless God tells them to. They don't decay or die, since they are spiritual beings. They even pray for us, as happened in Zechariah (1:12).
Angels Execute Judgement
Scripture shows that angels have another fierce task: when God passes judgement on injustice, they're often the ones who carry out the sentence. The usual image shows them with flaming swords, but the Bible shows how they can execute judgement in other ways as well. When carrying out a sentence, angels are more like a strike force than envoys. You won't find angels doing this on a Christmas card !
Real and False Angels
There are several Biblical references to the "Angel Of the Lord". This often means a particular archangel who acts as God's stunt double, to avoid the damage God's full presence does to created beings. But some ancient parts of the Jewish and Christian traditions report that in several instances the writers wrote 'angel' as a pious way to avoid using God's name. When they said "The Angel of the Lord", they sometimes meant "God". This substitution works fine for the book of Judges. But using "Angel Of the Lord" this way takes the edge off of one of the Bible's most powerful moments: Abraham's near-sacrifice of Isaac, where the "I" is clearly God and not an angel. Perhaps it's best to view such happenings the way the prophet Hosea saw Jacob's wrestling match: Jacob was both contending with God and wrestling with the unnamed 'man' Hosea calls an angel. How? God knows.
Angels and Demons
As Christians over the years have told it, angels have their counterparts on the 'dark side': demons. Most of what's said about angels can be flipped around and said of demons. (Keep this in mind whenever you read about either one. It helps us to understand the Plot.) Demons, however, have no message of their own to tell, they only have lies so they can undermine God's message. Since they no longer have their natural purpose, the demons' very existence is twisted up and broken. Satan is generally pictured as peer to the archangels such as Michael and Gabriel. It is written that Satan can even come disguised as an angel of light. Demons can come pretending to be angels, but unlike angels, they try to puff you up or divert you from Jesus or Scripture, sometimes even proclaiming a new doctrine or a new "move of God". Or, a demon will whip up your doubts until they blaze like a firestorm in your head. And they seize most any opportunity to rank themselves higher.
Angels vs. Spirit-Guides
Angels are a very different thing from 'spirit guides'. Angels don't try to run your life, they just do what they're sent to do and then slip back into the background. You don't go looking for an angel; they'll come in God's good timing. 'Spirit guides' keep coming back whether you want them there or not, manipulating and steering, demanding attention, trying to change the person into their image. 'Spirit guides' want you to be dependent on them. It's best not to mess with such phonies, but if you have, please ask God to send them away, and find prayer partners to bear this struggle with you. Who knows, God may send a real angel to roust out the spirit guides.
angels, take wing to top!
Guardian Angels
People from many times and cultures (even those who are not Christian, Jewish, Mormon, or Moslem) insist that angels have another task: that of being a guardian for specific people. The philosopher Philo described their protective role. The Bible speaks of angels as protectors too, but doesn't say much about the role of these "guardian angels". Psalm 34:7 is a good example; also the angel for each of the Asia Minor churches in Revelation. Jesus speaks of children as having their own angels. In Acts 12:15, the people at John Mark's mother's house thought their servant was seeing Peter's assigned angel at the doorway, when it was really Peter who had just escaped jail, thanks to help from an angel. Whether the jailbreaking angel really was 'assigned' to Peter (as they thought) or just to the task is not said, but they seemed to expect the angel to look like Peter. In an emergency role, angels can be like a divinely-sent 'first responder'. Thomas Aquinas insisted that God gave everyone their own guardian angel. In their guardian roles, angels are in no way dainty, Precious Moments-like creampuffs. They can be the fiercest of warriors and the swiftest of rescuers, and angelic determination knows no bounds. After all, they're on a mission. From God.
ARE ANGELS OVERRATED?
Where big things are happening, angels are there. The ginormous event of God's coming to us started off with a peasant girl from Galilee talking with the archangel Gabriel. Angel choirs abound and will be singing strongly when the Kingdom arrives in full. When Mary Magdalene peered into Jesus' tomb on that first Easter, she saw two angels, one sitting at each end where Jesus' body was laid. Just as an archangel set up the first coming of Christ, so an archangel will mark the final return of Christ.
Humans tend to get freaky when an angel shows up. We often quiver in fear or fall down in awe. But angels themselves are not really that big a deal. We're more important than they are. Angels are servants, acting on Someone Else's authority, while we humans make our own decisions, and are responsible to discern God's ways by what the Lord has given us. God made us, not angels, in the image of God. Jesus makes His followers, not angels or even archangels, into God's heirs. Angels go by what they know: they personally live in God's great presence and receive God's command. We are made to walk not by sight, but by faith. We're told not to worship angels in Colossians 2:18. (Indeed, any real angel will urge you not to worship them, but to worship God.) Nor are we to pray to angels, though, like the others in the divine realm, they are praying with us. The Almighty is approachable, even in heavenly glory, for the angels do it. How much more will it be so for creatures like us who bear God's image, once the Kingdom comes in full! What's much more important than us or the angel is the One for whom angels are acting. The author of the letter to the Hebrews (in chapter 1) takes pains to point out that however awesome you may think angels are, Jesus is far more important.

WHAT KIND OF MESSENGER?
"Angel" in Biblical Hebrew is mal'ak . Its main meaning is "messenger". It's the same name given to the prophetic book of the last of the Prophets. The book's author has no name, just the title of Messenger. He could've been the editor who gathered the Prophetic books together so his people could remember and prepare for what was to come. Some angeliphiles think Malachi is an angel, but the book's content and its presence among the Prophets make it certain that Malachi is a human messenger, a prophet. In Islam, Mohammed is called "the prophet" and "messenger of God", but is clearly not in any way an angel.
But this raises a question: can we always tell this difference, even when we find 'messenger' in the Bible or the traditions? Angels are definitely not humans, especially not dead humans who 'earn wings'. (This idea was not invented by Frank Capra for Clarence in "It's A Wonderful Life". Its roots go back at least as far as *The Martyrdom of Polycarp*, 1:39, early 2nd century AD.) As spirit-beings, angels don't even have food or sex in the same manner humans do, though they are pictured as having earth-type gender and earth-type body forms. This is mainly so we can relate to them better, but such forms may also reflect something of their personhood in the heavenlies. The ancients couldn't picture anything in the 'pure' world of heaven as being female or neuter, so they called them mostly what they felt was greatest - male. Maybe we're getting over such a narrow vision. Angels are often pictured as having feathered wings. The ancients believed the angels flew, so they portrayed it through the only means of flying they knew of: the feathered wings of a bird. I suspect this image comes in handy for angels. They don't need wings to fly (they're supernatural beings), but wings of what would be the necessary size inspire awe in us ground-bound material-types.
It's a fine line between the main task of an angel and the main task of a prophet, an evangelist, or a poet or storyteller, or anyone else who brings us a divine truth that's hard for us to take. The Christmas "herald angels" of Jesus' birth and resurrection were certainly supernatural. But sometimes it's not as clear. Their main task is to tell a truth which communicates God's will to some person(s), leaving the results to the people who hear it and the Holy Spirit at work among them. Since Christians are all given the charge of spreading the good report on Jesus Christ to others who don't know or understand, then in a way every Christian and every Christian church is a 'messenger', a mal'ak. Not an angel in the sense of a divine being, nor a substitute for angels, but the human bearer of good news from God. Paul picks up this theme when He calls the Corinthian Christians "our letter" and "a letter of Christ". One drawback: when their plans are ruined by the news, people tend to take it out on the messenger, and a divine messenger can make a better getaway than a human one.
It's said that ancient scholars would debate how many angels could fit on the head of a pin. The correct theoretical answer is 'all of them', but it's an imaginary question because angels aren't on the head of any pin - except perhaps as their idea of fun, like college kids cramming into a Volkswagen Beetle. They're usually too busy doing God's work to be pinned down.
return to the angel depot
GROUPS HAVE THEIR OWN ANGELS
There are some writers (like Walter Wink, in his *Powers* books on institutional and societal evil; or Peter Wagner in his writings about territorial demons) who have done a lot of hard thinking about the way the Bible itself sometimes acts as if there are angels and demons working on societies, institutions, and neighborhoods. Humans do not usually act alone or in a vacuum or from the outside; they work with other humans and act upon others collectively. Touch on it lightly, and it's "team spirit". With a stronger focus, it becomes a group ethos, character or identity. Cast the net larger and move it deeper, and it becomes a sense of neighborhood, or an ethnic heritage, or a national or religious identity. Each such group can be said to have its own 'spirit', one which is unlike any other group or any one person in it. There might be more to this than meets the eye, and the use of the term 'spirit' may be more than an accident. And there may be an angel standing guard of that group and its 'spirit'.
Not A Figure of Speech
In Revelation chap.s 1-6, each of the churches of Asia Minor are said to have an angel. Jesus is speaking to those angels, and through them is addressing those churches. Could each church's angel be the guardian angel of that church's 'spirit', its collective ('as-a-group') identity, since it is their collective character God is talking about? The book of Daniel mentions angels for nations. It's not wise to make a habit of reducing such angels down to a collective human function. The Bible refuses to do that, instead stressing that the group is changed by God's work - sometimes with the help of angels - through persons who are working for the group's sake. (Besides, I wouldn't want to get a group's real angel angry at me. They don't like being abstracted any more than you do.) Yet sometimes, such abstraction helps us to better understand what they're doing.
Cloud 9: angels, robes, flight lessons, top of page
ARE THERE OTHERS?
Not all spiritual beings are angels. The Bible speaks of an array of supernatural beings in heaven with God, such as cherubim and seraphim. In the Middle-Ages angelologies, they were categorized as angels, even though in the Bible they do not act as God's envoys (mal'akim) to earthlings. In Isaiah's vision of the heavenly royal hall, the Seraphim are the court guards serving God. They interact with Isaiah because he is in the court, not on earth, and because God wants to forgive Isaiah's sin right there and then. Cherubim are anything but 'cherubic' chubby toddlers. They were portrayed in the Temple days as having features of an eagle, a bull, a lion, and a human. There may be other beings untold. We're told nothing much about these heavenly beings and since they have no dealings with us and do not protect like guardian angels, they're likely some different kind of thing.
Speculating on the Unknown
The other supernatural beings probably live just for the sake of praising God. Some say they watch over different created worlds. But we don't really know. Speculation has run rampant for thousands of years. The main Roman Catholic angel tradition goes back to Pseudo-Dionysius's book *The Celestial Hierarchy* in the fifth century. He describes a nine-fold order for supernatural beings, from highest to lowest: Seraphs, Cherubs, Thrones, Dominions, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels. The order was designed mostly for reasons of philosophy; it matched neither the Bible nor the reports of angel experiences by the faithful. (The apostle Paul writes about some of these, not as ranks of supernatural beings, but as groupings which may or may not include living humans and institutions, and which may or may not be good.) Thomas Aquinas put his spin on Pseudo-Dionysius' order in his *Summa Theologica*, spelling out who was in these orders and what each order did. Other medieval Catholic writers spun off even further into incredible detail. Reading those medieval angelologies is a form of mental torture, yet in those days students were often required to know them thoroughly. Even today, the Internet is full of talk about supposed angels with names that are made up to sound biblical. (This was done in ancient times, too.) The truth is, the realm of angels is simply beyond us. Several key things hold true from this maze of angel studies:
There is a great cycle of life where what comes from God draws back to God.
Angels cannot repair our broken relationship with God. That is the work of Jesus alone.
Each and every person is known to God and is under God's loving care, even if they don't (or don't yet) believe in Christ.
Oh, about Satan: he's a whole 'nother bag, for another discussion.

Child Nutrition
Sugar - a deadly Metabolic Poison
No sane parent would deliberately give their child heart disease or cancer. Yet this is exactly what most parents do by feeding their children disease-causing foods like sugar, white flour, milk, ice cream, cookies, candy, cakes, fruit juices, sodas, pizza, breakfast cereals, french fries and salt. These so-called "foods" are causing measurable problems in children as young as age 3.
Center stage in a healthy diet should be fresh vegetables. We are accustomed to viewing vegetables as a side dish, but they should be the main attraction. Fresh, organic, unprocessed whole vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts and seeds along with the good fats and small amounts of clean animal protein comprise a healthy diet, whether you are an adult or a child.
Children are known for not wanting to eat their vegetables. Yet I have found this is often a myth if tasty, fresh vegetables are served with delicious oils. One toddler I knew thought a raw carrot was a great treat, and many children enjoy attractively made salads. Vegetable juices, with a little apple added for sweetness, have also been a hit with kids.
The gluten grains, wheat, rye, barley, spelt and kamut, should be avoided since a large percentage of the population is now allergic to gluten.
High-quality supplementation is a must. At minimum your child should be taking our children's multi.
Sugar -- a Deadly Metabolic Poison
. . . get it out of your child's life!
No parent should allow their children to eat refined sugar in any form!
I imagine when they read this parents will groan and feel this is "unrealistic," when there is such a pervasive belief in our culture that candy, cookies and ice cream are harmless treats for little ones.
Please read my article Sugar is Killing Our Children to become forcefully disabused of the notion that sugar is harmless. It is a deadly metabolic poison which should be outlawed! You may be going against the cultural grain, but once you to wake up to how very dangerous sugar is, I hope you will become part of a vanguard of warriors to get sugar out of children's lives!
Getting children off sugar can be a challenge. A natural palate finds refined sugar much too sweet and is well satisfied by sugars in fruits and vegetables. But our kids have jaded palates and many are addicted to sugar. You can use stevia instead of sugar as a sweetener, but this is tricky because it keeps the taste for excessive sweetness alive.
To wean your child away from sugar, you may find our l-glutamine product helpful. Also make sure they're getting plenty of the good fats and plenty of vitamin C.
Cut Out that Fruit Juice
. . . it's a make-believe food!
Real foods come in forms that nature provides, and nature does not provide fruit juices. High in sugar and low in nutrients, fruit juices are bad for adults and disastrous for children.
Eating whole fruits is quite different because you are getting the fibrous part of the fruit as well as its juice. This slows down the entry of sugar from the fruit into your bloodstream. With extracted juice, however, you get a sudden jolt of sugar that creates major disturbances in insulin balance as well as other hormones, minerals and neurotransmitters.
In short, drinking fruit juice throws the body into biochemical chaos. These imbalances lead to depressed immunity and a higher risk of infections, ADHD, allergies and other problems.
What to give your child instead? For infants, it should be mother's milk until the age of one or two (in some cultures, children continue to breastfeed to the age of 3 and more). After weaning, pure water and freshly prepared, organic vegetable juices are the best choices.
We recommend using a VitaMix to make your juices. The VitaMix is an extremely high-powered blender, not a juice extractor, so fiber is preserved. You can add a little apple to your vegetable drinks for sweetness, however even with the VitaMix, fruit juices are not recommended, because you will be getting to much sugar.
Children Need Supplements Too!
. . . a good diet is not enough
For various reasons I've enumerated elsewhere, a good diet alone is not enough these days to maintain health. Our toxic world increases our need for nutrients at the very time the supply from our food is down due to depleted soils and other factors.
Children need to be taking a good multi, and we have a new children's chewable multi that fits the bill. Unlike most children's multis, which are junk vitamins loaded with sugar, our children's multi is made with the same kind of high-quality ingredients used in our adult formula. A very small amount of natural unrefined sugar and flavor is added, so you'll have no problem getting your child to take them -- in fact, they'll probably consider them treats.
This supplement is suitable for children over the age of four or as soon as the child can be instructed to chew rather than swallow the tablet whole. However even infants can take half a tablet at a time if it is pulverized into a powder and mixed with juice or food.
Your child may need additional supplements depending on his or her particular health situation. Please call our office to speak with one of our consultants to devise an individualized supplement program.

Go Arizona Cardinals
In a supermarket, Kurtis the stock boy was busily working when a new voice came over the loud speaker asking for a carry-out at register 4. Kurtis was almost finished and wanted to get some fresh air, so he decided to answer the call. As he approached the checkout stand, a distant smile caught his eye ~ the checkout girl was beautiful. She was an older woman (maybe 26, and he was only 22) and he fell in love.
Later that day, after his shift was over, he waited by the punch clock to find out her name. She came into the break room, smiled softly at him, took her card, punched out, and then left. He looked at her card, BRENDA. He walked out only to see her start walking up the road. Next day, he waited outside as she left the supermarket, and offered her a ride home. He looked harmless enough, and she accepted. When he dropped her off, he asked if maybe he could see her again, outside of work. She simply said it wasn't possible.
He pressed and she explained she had two children and she couldn't afford a babysitter, so he offered to pay for the babysitter. Reluctantly she accepted his offer for a date for the following Saturday. That Saturday night, he arrived at her door only to have her tell him that she was unable to go with him. The babysitter had called and canceled. To which Kurtis simply said, "Well, let's take the kids with us."
She tried to explain that taking the children was not an option, but again not taking no for an answer, he pressed. Finally Brenda brought him inside to meet her children. She had an older daughter who was just as cute as a bug, Kurtis thought, and then Brenda brought out her son, in a wheelchair. He was born a paraplegic with Downs Syndrome.
Kurtis told Brenda, "I still don't understand why the kids can't come with us." Brenda was amazed. Most men would run away from a woman with two kids, especially if one had disabilities ~ just like her first husband and father of her children had done. But Kurtis was not ordinary ~ he had a different mindset.
That evening Kurtis and Brenda loaded up the kids and went to dinner and the movies. When her son needed anything, Kurtis would take care of him. When he needed to use the restroom, he picked him up out of his wheelchair, took him, and brought him back. The kids loved Kurtis. At the end of the evening, Brenda knew this was the man she was going to marry and spend the rest of her life with.
A year later, they were married and Kurtis adopted both of her children. Since then they have added five more kids.
So what happened to Kurtis the stock boy at a grocery store in Cedar Falls, Iowa and Brenda the checkout girl? Well, Mr. & Mrs. Kurt Warner now live in Arizona where he is currently employed as the quarterback of the National Football League Arizona Cardinals and has his Cardinals in the hunt for an appearance in the Super Bowl. Is this a surprise ending or could you have guessed that he was not an ordinary person.
It should be noted that he also quarterbacked the Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI...and he has also been the NFL's Most Valuable Player twice and the Super Bowl's Most Valuable Player. He established the First Things First Foundation in the spring of 2001 with wife Brenda to promote Christian values and bless the lives of those less fortunate with projects such as trips to Disney World for ill children, building recreation centers in children's hospitals, helping single moms achieve the dream of homeownership and teaching Special Olympians the football basics. All projects are centered on Kurt and Brenda's life theme: faith and family come first. The official website is: http://www.kurtwarner.org
Here’s what Kurt Warner says about his life…
“I was raised in the church, so faith and God were part of my life, but for me it was just kind of there – there on Sundays and when I was going through a tough time. I always had God as a background, but I never truly accepted Jesus until I was about 25 years old. My Arena League teammates, a pastor friend of mine, and my future wife were constantly asking questions about my beliefs, and I began to question where I was and whether I had really put my complete faith in God. Their questions led me to the Truth – that faith is about a relationship, and it’s about Jesus. Up to that point, I had never really considered that. I struggled for so long and so many things went against me.. I was swimming upstream. When I finally gave my life over to God – it was then the joy and happiness came into my life. Now I realize my role here on Earth is not to throw touchdown passes and win football games, although that is the position and the platform that I have been given. I realize my goal is to win as many people to Jesus as possible. I have an open-door policy, where I’m able to talk about what is most important to me, and obviously God is #1.”
Of course, as many of you know, the current miracle he is working on in his life is to win the Super Bowl on February 1. His Arizona Cardinals are being talked about as the least deserving of teams to be in the Super Bowl. Playing in the weakest division in the NFL, they barely managed a winning record during the regular season. During the playoffs, they had to play an extra week via the “wildcard” route because of their poor regular season record. They defeated three teams considered superior to them. So, on February 1st, they will be playing the mighty Pittsburg Goliaths… errr… I mean Steelers… and they obviously will be heavy underdogs. So, what’s new for the born-again, Kurt Warner?
Check out Kurt’s website. You will be blessed.
Now I have a team to cheer for on Super Bowl Sunday.
Be blessed…
